What We Do

Walkway Installation
& Repair Services

Full-scope walkways work in Connecticut. Real craftsmanship, honest pricing, and results that hold up.

01 — Walkway Installation

What We Build

A walkway is the first thing your guests step on. We build them in CT for folks who care how their house looks from the curb. Bluestone is the classic CT choice. Pavers give you pattern and color options at a lower cost. Natural stone reads as custom and one of a kind. Brick fits older colonial homes. We do all of them. The work underneath is the same regardless of the material on top. Solid base, real drainage, proper pitch for water runoff.

02 — Custom Paths

End-to-End

Most folks call us for a front entry walkway from the driveway to the door. That is the highest impact walkway because everyone sees it. We also build side yard walkways, garden paths through plantings, connecting walks between the patio and the pool, and longer walkways for bigger properties. Each one needs different width, different pitch, different layout. Standard residential walkway is 3 to 4 feet wide. We can go wider for grander entries or narrower for garden paths. Tell us where it goes and we figure out the right size.

03 — Base First

Under the Surface

Walkways fail for the same reasons patios fail in CT. Bad base, no drainage, and joint sand that washes out. The difference with walkways is the heavy foot traffic. A walkway carries more pounds per square foot per day than most patios. That means the base has to handle the load. We dig the base to the right depth, compact in layers, install drainage if grade requires, and finish with polymeric sand. A walkway built this way stays flat, drains right, and looks the same in 15 years as the day we finish.

Common Problems

Common Walkway Problems
in Connecticut

We get called for walkway repairs almost as often as new installations. Folks inherit walkways from previous owners or they had a contractor cut corners. Here is what we see most in CT.

Walkway Is Uneven or Has Trip Hazards

Settled base or freeze heaving. Pieces of the walkway sit higher than others, creating trip hazards. This is a safety issue and a liability issue, especially near the front door. We lift the uneven sections, rebuild the base under them, and reset the stones flat. Sometimes a few problem spots, sometimes the whole walkway needs rebuilding.

Water Pools on the Walk

No pitch was built in, or the pitch is the wrong direction. Water sits on the walkway after every rain. In winter that water freezes and creates ice. We rework the pitch so water runs off to the side instead of staying on the path. Sometimes a quick fix, sometimes a full rebuild depending on how bad it is.

Joint Sand Gone, Weeds Everywhere

Joint sand washed out and weeds moved in. Common on older walkways with regular sand joints. We remove the old material, deep clean the joints, and install polymeric sand. The new sand locks in place, stops the weeds, and keeps water from getting under the stones.

Our Process

How We
Build Your Walkway

Five steps from first call to finished walkway. Same process as our other masonry work, scaled for the smaller footprint of a walkway.

1

Site Visit & Consultation

We come out to the property, look at the site, take measurements, and listen to what you want. Layout, materials, budget, timeline. No pressure. This is where we figure out if the project makes sense.

2

Written Estimate

Within a few business days you get a detailed written estimate with line items for materials, labor, permits, and disposal. No vague lump-sum numbers. You see exactly what you are paying for before signing anything.

3

Excavation & Base

Excavation to the right depth. Compacted gravel base with proper slope for drainage. Edge restraints installed. Base is invisible in the finished walkway but it is what keeps everything flat.

4

Paver or Stone Install

Bedding layer screeded flat. Pavers or stones set to the pattern with tight joints. Cuts made on site for curves. Joints filled with polymeric sand and swept clean.

5

Walkthrough & Handoff

Final walkthrough with you on site. We go over the work, care instructions, and any maintenance you should know about. Job site gets cleaned. You get finished work backed by our workmanship.

Materials That Matter

What Your Walkway
Is Made Of

Pick the material that fits your house and your budget. We show you each option on the site visit. You pick.

Natural Bluestone

Full-color or blue-blue bluestone slabs. Thermal or natural cleft finish. Classic walkway material that gets better with age.

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured pavers in standard sizes. Consistent thickness makes install faster. Wide color range and lower material cost than natural stone.

Flagstone

Irregular natural stone in random shapes. Set with wider joints. Great for informal cottage-style walkways that fit the landscape.

Compacted Gravel Base

Processed gravel base compacted in lifts. Invisible in the finished walkway but it is what stops sinking and shifting over time.

Polymeric Sand

Joint sand that hardens when activated. Locks pavers together, stops weeds and washout. Reapplied every 5 to 8 years.

Edge Restraints

Aluminum or plastic edging holding perimeter units in place. Prevents spread and drift over time. Standard on every install.

Watch For These

What Makes a Walkway Fail
in Connecticut

Walkways fail more often than patios because they carry more foot traffic and they are usually closer to the house where water collects. Here is what to watch for in CT.

1

Thin Base

A walkway with a 2 inch base will not last. Foot traffic compresses the base over time and the walkway settles. We dig 8 to 10 inches for most walkways, more if the soil is soft. The base is two thirds of the work on a walkway. Most contractors rush it. We do not.

2

Wrong Pitch

A walkway needs to drain water off to the side, not toward the house or into low spots. Pitch should be subtle, around a quarter inch per foot. Built right, you do not notice the pitch but the water moves. Built wrong, water sits on the walkway after every rain and freezes in winter.

3

Cheap Edge Treatment

Walkways need edge restraints, same as patios. Without them, the outside stones shift sideways when foot traffic pushes them. The whole walkway starts to spread. We install proper edge restraints, buried under the soil. You never see them but they hold everything in place.

4

Wrong Stone Thickness

Some contractors install 1 inch stone where 2 inch stone belongs. Thinner stones crack from foot traffic and freeze heaving. We spec the right stone thickness for the use. Walkway stones should be at least 1.5 to 2 inches thick for full size pavers and natural stone.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions About Walkways
in CT

Real answers from 15 years of walkways in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

How much does a walkway cost in CT?

Depends on length, width, and material. A short bluestone front walk is on the lower end. A long meandering walkway in custom stone runs higher. We come out, measure the route, and put a real number in writing within two business days. No phone-guess pricing.

How long does a walkway take to build?

Most walkways finish in 3 to 7 days once we start. Longer walkways or jobs with site work run a bit longer. Weather can stretch things. We give you a real timeline in the estimate. We do not stretch your job out by starting three at once.

What is the best walkway material for CT?

Bluestone is the most popular because it looks classic and stays grippy when wet. Pavers are great if you want pattern and color and a lower cost. Flagstone for a more natural look. All three work in CT weather when installed right. We help you pick on the site visit.

How wide should my front walkway be?

Standard residential front walkway is 4 to 5 feet wide. That lets two people walk side by side comfortably. Narrower walkways feel cramped from the curb. Wider walkways look more grand and intentional. We measure your front yard and tell you what size fits the house.

Will the walkway crack in winter?

Built right, no. CT freeze and thaw cycles will crack walkways with shallow bases or thin stones. We use the right base depth and the right stone thickness for the climate. Our walkways from 10 years ago still look the same today, freeze cycles and all.

Do I need a permit for a walkway?

Most CT towns do not require a permit for a ground level walkway under standard size. Some towns want one if the walkway is over a certain square footage or crosses a regulated buffer. We check with your building department before starting. If a permit is needed, we pull it.
