What We Do

Bluestone
& Paver Installation Services

Full-scope bluestone & pavers installation work in Connecticut. Real craftsmanship, honest pricing, and results that hold up.

01 — Bluestone & Pavers

What We Install

Bluestone and pavers are the two most popular hardscape materials in CT. Both look great when installed right. Both fail fast when installed wrong. We install both across CT. Bluestone is natural stone, quarried mostly in Pennsylvania and New York. Thermal finish gives you a smooth surface with controlled texture. Natural cleft is rougher and more rustic. Pavers are engineered concrete made in molds. Modern pavers come in dozens of colors, sizes, and patterns. We handle the design, the order, and the install.

02 — Custom Patterns

End-to-End

Most of our bluestone and paver work is for patios. We also do walkways, pool decks, driveways, and steps using the same materials. Bluestone works for any of these applications. Pavers work for most, though for driveways we use heavy duty pavers rated for vehicle loads. Patios are the largest jobs by square footage. Pool decks need slip resistant materials and proper drainage. Driveways need a deeper base for the weight. Each application has different requirements. We have done all of them in CT for 15 years.

03 — Base First

Under the Surface

The biggest mistake homeowners make is focusing on the stone or paver they want without asking about what goes underneath. The material on top is maybe 20 percent of the cost and even less of the work. The base, the drainage, the edge restraints, the polymeric sand, those are the parts that determine if your job lasts 5 years or 30 years. We install bluestone and pavers the right way underneath. That is why our work holds up while other installations sink, shift, and crack within a few CT winters.

Common Problems

Common Problems We Fix
in CT

We get called for bluestone and paver repair work as often as new installs. Most repairs trace back to base or drainage issues. Here is what we see most in CT homes.

Bluestone Cracking or Spalling

Spalling is when the surface of the stone flakes off. Usually caused by the wrong stone for CT weather, or by deicing salt eating the surface over years. We pull damaged stones and replace with thermal bluestone that handles freeze and thaw better. We tell every customer to skip the rock salt and use sand instead in winter.

Pavers Sinking or Settling

Base problem, every time. The contractor did not dig deep enough or did not compact the gravel right. Over a few CT winters, the pavers settle into low spots that pool water. We lift the sunken sections, rebuild the base in those areas, and reset the pavers level.

Stained or Discolored Surface

Bluestone and pavers can stain from leaves, fertilizer, oil drips, and salt. Most stains can be cleaned with the right cleaner. Old efflorescence (white film) can be acid washed off. We clean and reseal as a maintenance service. If the staining is deep or widespread, sometimes replacement makes more sense than restoration.

Our Process

How
We Install

Same process for bluestone and pavers. The materials are different but the work underneath is the same.

1

Site Visit & Consultation

We come out to the property, look at the site, take measurements, and listen to what you want. Layout, materials, budget, timeline. No pressure. This is where we figure out if the project makes sense.

2

Written Estimate

Within a few business days you get a detailed written estimate with line items for materials, labor, permits, and disposal. No vague lump-sum numbers. You see exactly what you are paying for before signing anything.

3

Base Prep & Excavation

Excavation to the right depth. Compacted base of gravel and screenings. Edge restraints in place. This layer is invisible when the job is done but it is what keeps the pavers flat for 20 years.

4

Setting & Cutting

Bluestone slabs or pavers set into the bedding layer. Cuts made on site for edges and pattern breaks. Level checked constantly. Joints filled with polymeric sand and activated.

5

Walkthrough & Handoff

Final walkthrough with you on site. We go over the work, care instructions, and any maintenance you should know about. Job site gets cleaned. You get finished work backed by our workmanship.

Materials That Matter

Bluestone
and Paver Options

Two main categories with multiple options inside each. We show you samples on the site visit and walk through the pros and cons of each.

Natural Bluestone

Full-color or blue-blue bluestone slabs. Thermal or natural cleft finish. Cut on site for edges. Dense material that handles CT freeze and thaw for decades.

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured pavers in standard sizes and patterns. Wide color and texture range. Consistent thickness makes install faster. Good option for tight budgets and quick projects.

Compacted Gravel Base

Processed gravel base compacted in lifts. This layer is invisible but it is what keeps pavers flat over time. Skip it and the surface starts sinking within two years.

Polymeric Sand

Joint sand that hardens when activated with water. Locks pavers together, stops weeds, and resists washout. Reapplied every 5 to 8 years as maintenance.

Edge Restraints

Aluminum or plastic edging that holds the perimeter pavers in place. Without it, edges spread over time and the whole surface shifts. Standard on every install we do.

Bedding Sand

Concrete or masonry sand screeded flat as the setting bed. Consistent thickness across the whole area so no pavers sit low or high.

Watch For These

What Makes Bluestone
and Paver Installations Fail

Most bluestone and paver failures in CT trace back to the same handful of mistakes. Here is what to watch for before you hire any installer.

1

Shallow Base

Pavers and bluestone need a base of compacted crushed stone underneath. Most residential applications need 6 to 8 inches. Driveways need 10 to 12 inches. Some installers use 2 to 3 inches because it is cheaper and faster. Those installations sink and shift within a few CT winters. We dig to the right depth, every time.

2

No Edge Restraints

Without edge restraints, the outside row of pavers shifts outward over time. Once that happens, joints open up, sand washes out, and the whole installation starts to come apart. We install plastic or metal edge restraints around every job. They are buried, you never see them, but they are what holds everything together.

3

Wrong Joint Sand

Regular play sand washes out of joints in the first heavy rain. Empty joints let water under the stones, the base shifts, and the installation fails. Polymeric sand activates with water, locks in place, and stays put for years. We use polymeric on every job.

4

Skipping Drainage Planning

Water has to go somewhere. If the installation does not drain, water pools, freezes, and pushes the stones around. We plan drainage before we start digging. Sometimes a French drain. Sometimes pitching the surface. Always thought through.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions About Bluestone
and Pavers

Real answers from 15 years of bluestone & pavers installation in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

Bluestone or pavers? Which is better?

Depends on the look and the budget. Bluestone is natural stone, more expensive, classic CT look that fits traditional homes. Pavers are engineered, uniform, lower cost per square foot, come in many colors and patterns. Both last decades when installed right. We show you both on the site visit and you pick.

What is the difference between thermal and natural cleft bluestone?

Thermal is heat-treated, giving you a smoother, more uniform surface with controlled texture. Natural cleft is the raw stone face, rougher and more variable. Thermal is more popular for patios and pool decks because it is comfortable on bare feet. Natural cleft reads as more rustic and traditional.

How much do bluestone and pavers cost in CT?

Bluestone runs higher per square foot than pavers because it is natural stone. Total project cost depends on the square footage, the design complexity, and site conditions. A standard 400 square foot bluestone patio costs more than the same patio in pavers. We give you a written estimate with material and labor broken out so you can compare.

Will the bluestone or pavers fade?

Bluestone has natural color variation that softens over decades but does not fade dramatically. Pavers from major manufacturers have UV-stable pigments that hold color for 15 to 20 years before any visible fading. Cheaper pavers fade faster. We recommend tier one manufacturers like Cambridge, Belgard, or Techo-Bloc.

How long does a bluestone or paver installation take?

Most patios finish in 5 to 10 work days. Walkways finish faster. Driveways and larger pool decks run longer. Weather can stretch the timeline because polymeric sand needs dry conditions to activate. We give you a real timeline in the estimate and update you as we go.

Do I need to seal bluestone or pavers?

Pavers usually do not need sealing, though some homeowners seal them for color enhancement or stain resistance. Bluestone benefits from sealing every 3 to 5 years, especially if it is in a high traffic area or near grills. Sealing keeps stains off and helps the stone shed water. We can seal as part of the install or as a separate service.
