Stucco Installation

Full-scope stucco application work in Connecticut. Real craftsmanship, honest pricing, and results that hold up.

01 — Stucco Applications

What We Do

Stucco is one of the toughest exterior finishes when it is applied right. Done wrong, it traps moisture and rots the wall behind it. We apply stucco in CT for full house exteriors, chimneys, foundation walls, and accent walls. Traditional three-coat stucco is the most durable and the most permanent. Synthetic stucco systems like EIFS install faster and cost less but have specific use cases. We also repair existing stucco that has cracked, stained, delaminated, or shows water damage. Repair work needs to address the cause, not just the visible damage.

02 — Traditional & Synthetic

End-to-End

Most folks call us for one of three reasons. New construction or addition where stucco is the chosen exterior. Old stucco that is cracking or staining and needs repair. Chimney stucco that has failed and needs to be replaced. Foundation stucco for above-grade portions of foundation walls is another common job. Each application has different prep requirements and different finish techniques. We tell you up front which kind of stucco fits your project and why. Some homes in CT do not work for stucco at all and we will tell you that too.

03 — Moisture Management

Under the Coat

Stucco fails because of moisture, almost every time. Water gets behind the stucco through bad flashing, missing weep screeds, or wrong installation around windows and doors. Once water is behind stucco, it cannot dry out. Wood rots, mold grows, and the stucco eventually delaminates. We install proper moisture barriers, weather-resistant lath, and weep details that let any incidental moisture escape. Right prep work is two thirds of a stucco job. The finish coats on top are the visible part but the work underneath is what makes the stucco last.

Common Problems

Common Stucco Problems
in Connecticut

Stucco problems are common on older CT homes and on newer homes where the original contractor cut corners. Most issues trace back to moisture management. Here is what we see most often.

Cracking Through the Stucco

Hairline cracks are normal as buildings move. Wider cracks mean either structural movement or stucco that was applied too thin. We assess the cause first. Hairline cracks get patched and painted over. Structural cracks need the underlying issue addressed before stucco repair makes sense.

Staining and Discoloration

Brown rust stains usually mean rusting lath or metal flashing behind the stucco. Green or black stains usually mean moisture coming through from inside. We diagnose the cause before just painting over the stain. Painting over a moisture problem makes it look fine for six months until the stain comes back.

Delaminating or Buckling Stucco

Major moisture problem. Stucco has separated from the substrate behind it. This is a tear-off and re-do situation, not a patch. We remove the failed stucco, address the moisture source, replace damaged sheathing if needed, and re-stucco from scratch. Trying to patch delaminated stucco wastes money.

Materials That Matter

Stucco
Options

Two main categories with different use cases. We talk through both on the site visit and tell you which fits your project.

Traditional 3-Coat Stucco

Scratch, brown, and finish coats over lath. Total thickness 7/8 inch minimum. Most durable option. Lasts 50 to 80 years when applied right.

Synthetic Stucco / EIFS

Insulated finish system over foam board. Faster install, lower cost, includes R-value. Requires strict attention to flashing and moisture management.

Weather-Resistant Barriers

Building wrap or peel-and-stick membrane behind the lath. Laps overlap correctly. This is the last line of defense if any water gets past the stucco.

Metal Lath

Galvanized or stainless self-furring lath fastened to the substrate. Provides the mechanical bond that lets stucco stay put for decades.

Weep Screeds & Trim

Bottom-of-wall weep screeds let incidental moisture drain out. Corner aids and control joints installed at the right locations. Skipped on cheap installs.

Acrylic Finish Coats

Color and texture finish coats. Wide color range, custom textures. Can be recoated every 10 to 15 years to refresh the look without full re-stucco.

Watch For These

What Makes Stucco Fail
in Connecticut

Most stucco failures come down to moisture management. CT homes deal with rain, snow, ice, and humidity through the year. Stucco that does not handle water properly will fail. Here is what to watch for.

1

Missing Weep Screeds

Weep screeds at the bottom of stucco walls let any incidental moisture drain out. Without them, water gets trapped and rots the wall framing. Many older CT homes have stucco without weep screeds. We install them on every new stucco job and add them when we do major repairs.

2

Bad Flashing Around Windows and Doors

Windows and doors are where most water gets behind stucco. Flashing has to be installed before the stucco goes on. If the flashing is wrong or missing, water enters every time it rains. We inspect flashing during prep and replace what is bad before any stucco gets applied.

3

Stucco Applied Too Thin

Stucco needs minimum thickness to be durable. Cheap installs go on too thin, which leads to cracking and shorter life. Three-coat traditional stucco should be at least 7/8 inch thick total. We measure during application to ensure proper thickness.

4

No Time Between Coats

Each coat needs time to cure before the next one goes on. Rushed jobs apply coats too fast, which causes cracking and adhesion failure. We follow proper curing schedules. That is why stucco takes longer than some homeowners expect. Right way takes time.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions
About Stucco

Real answers from 15 years of stucco application in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

How much does stucco cost in CT?

Depends on square footage, traditional vs synthetic, and how much prep work the substrate needs. Full house exteriors run on the higher end. Repair work runs lower. New stucco on a clean substrate is cheaper than stucco over a problem area. We come out, inspect the existing surface, and put a real number in writing.

How long does stucco last?

Traditional three-coat stucco applied properly lasts 50 to 80 years. EIFS systems last 25 to 30 years before they need replacement. Repair work and partial sections vary widely based on the underlying condition. Either way, stucco is one of the most durable exterior options when installed right.

Is stucco a good choice for CT weather?

Yes, when installed right. Stucco handles CT freeze and thaw well as long as moisture cannot get behind it. The key is proper weather barriers, weep screeds, and flashing details. Stucco fails in CT when those parts are skipped. We never skip them.

Traditional stucco or EIFS? Which is better?

Depends on the application. Traditional three-coat stucco lasts longer and is more weather-resistant. EIFS installs faster, costs less, and includes insulation. For full house exteriors we usually recommend traditional. For specific applications EIFS can make sense. We talk through both on the site visit.

Can stucco be repaired or does it need full replacement?

Most stucco can be repaired if the damage is limited to the surface. Cracking, staining, and small areas of damage are usually repairable. Delamination, widespread water damage, or major failures need full replacement of affected sections. We assess on the site visit and tell you which category your stucco is in.

How do I take care of stucco?

Annual visual inspection for cracks. Pressure washing every few years to remove dirt. Fresh paint or sealer every 7 to 10 years depending on exposure. Address small cracks before they get bigger. Most stucco maintenance is simple but it needs to happen. We give every customer a maintenance checklist.
