What We Do

Custom Patio
Installation Services

Full-scope custom patios work in Connecticut. Real craftsmanship, honest pricing, and results that hold up.

01 — Patio Installation

What We Build

A patio is where your yard becomes a room. We build them in CT for folks who actually want to use their backyard. Bluestone for that classic New England look. Pavers when you want pattern and color options. Natural stone if you want one of a kind. Brick for traditional homes. We will help you pick what fits your house. The work is the same either way. Real base prep, proper drainage, hand-set materials, polymeric sand in the joints. No corner cutting underground.

02 — Multi-Level Designs

End-to-End

Most folks who call us want a patio off the back of the house. Some want a separate sitting area in the yard, near a fire pit or a garden. We also build pool deck patios, entry patios that wrap around the front door, and big multi-level patios that step down a slope. Each one needs different base depth, different drainage, different layout work. We have built every kind in CT. Tell us what you want to use the space for, and we design the patio around that.

03 — Base First

Under the Surface

Patios fail for three reasons in CT: bad base, no drainage, and skipping polymeric sand on the joints. All three are invisible until the patio starts to settle, sink, or grow weeds. We dig the base to the right depth for the soil, compact it in layers, install drainage under the patio when the grade calls for it, and finish every joint with polymeric sand that locks in place. A patio built this way stays flat, stays clean, and holds up to CT freeze and thaw for decades, not seasons.

Common Problems

Common Patio Problems
in Connecticut

Sometimes you do not need a new patio. You need an old one fixed. We get called for repair work on patios built by other contractors. Here are the problems we see most often in CT homes.

Patio Is Sinking or Uneven

Almost always a base problem. The contractor did not dig deep enough or did not compact the gravel in layers. Over a few CT winters, the patio settles in spots and you end up with low corners that pool water. We lift the affected stones, rebuild the base properly, and reset the pavers. Sometimes we can save the original materials. Sometimes the patio needs a full rebuild.

Weeds Growing Through the Joints

Joint sand was either skipped or was the wrong type. Regular sand washes out and weeds take over. Polymeric sand locks in place when activated with water and stays put for years. We pull the old joint material, deep clean the joints, and install fresh polymeric sand. Looks new and stops the weeds at the same time.

Cracked or Loose Pavers

Could be base settlement, could be freeze and thaw damage, could be a stone that was already weak when it was installed. We pull the damaged pieces, check the base under that section, and replace the stones. If your patio is more than 10 years old and we cannot match the color exactly, we will tell you up front.

Within a few business days you get a detailed written estimate with line items for materials, labor, permits, and disposal. No vague lump-sum numbers. You see exactly what you are paying for before signing anything.

3

Excavation to the depth the material and soil require. Base of processed gravel compacted in lifts. Slopes set for drainage away from the house. This is what makes a patio last decades.

4

Bedding layer of sand or stone dust screeded flat. Stones or pavers set to the pattern. Cuts made on site for edges and curves. Every piece checked for level as we go.

Materials That Matter

What Your Patio
Is Made Of

Pick the material that fits your house, your yard, and your budget. We will tell you the truth about each one. No upselling, no pushing the most expensive option.

Natural Bluestone

Full-color or blue-blue bluestone slabs. Thermal or natural cleft finish. Dense material that handles CT freeze and thaw for decades.

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured pavers in standard sizes and patterns. Wide color range and consistent thickness. Faster to install and lower material cost than natural stone.

Flagstone

Irregular natural stone in random shapes. Classic New England look. Set with wider joints filled with sand or polymeric material. Character grows over time.

Compacted Gravel Base

Processed gravel base compacted in lifts to the right depth. Invisible when done but this layer is what keeps the patio flat for the long haul.

Polymeric Sand

Joint sand that hardens when activated. Locks pavers together, stops weeds, and resists washout. Reapplied every 5 to 8 years.

Concrete Slabs

Poured-in-place concrete with broom, stamped, or exposed aggregate finish. Lower cost than pavers but requires proper joints to control cracking.

Watch For These

What Makes a Patio Fail
in Connecticut

Most patios that fail in CT do not fail because of the stones on top. They fail because of what is underneath. Here is what to watch for before you hire any patio contractor, including us.

1

Base Too Shallow

In CT, the frost line is around 42 inches. Patios with a 2 inch base of gravel will heave and settle when the ground freezes and thaws. We dig to the right depth for the patio type and the soil. Usually 8 to 12 inches of compacted base, more on soft or wet soil. The base is the most important part of the job.

2

No Drainage Plan

Water has to go somewhere. If the patio sits in a low spot or the slope sends water toward the house, you have a problem. We figure out where the water goes before we start digging. Sometimes we install a French drain under the patio. Sometimes we pitch the patio away from the house. Always thought out, not just dumped on the ground.

3

Wrong Joint Sand

Regular play sand washes out of patio joints in the first heavy rain. Once the joints are empty, water gets under the stones, the base shifts, and the patio starts to sink. Polymeric sand activates with water, locks in place, and stays put for years. We use polymeric sand on every patio. No shortcuts.

4

Skipping Edge Restraints

Without edge restraints, the outside row of pavers shifts outward over time. Once that happens, the whole patio starts to spread. We install plastic or metal edge restraints around every patio. They are buried, you never see them, but they hold the whole thing together.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions About Patios
in CT

Real answers from 15 years of custom patios in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

How much does a custom patio cost in CT?

Depends on size, material, and site conditions. A 300 square foot bluestone patio is on one end. A 1,000 square foot multi-level patio with built-in walls and drainage is much higher. We come out, measure, look at the grade, and put a real number in writing within two business days. No phone-guess pricing because every site is different.

How long does it take to build a patio?

Most patios finish in one to two weeks once we start. Bigger jobs or multi-level patios run two to three weeks. Weather can stretch things. We give you a real timeline in the estimate and update you if anything changes. We do not start three jobs at once and stretch yours out.

Do I need a permit for a patio?

Most CT towns do not require a permit for a ground level patio at standard size. Some towns want a permit if the patio is over a certain square footage or if it includes structural elements like walls or steps. We check with your building department before we start. If a permit is needed, we pull it.

Bluestone or pavers? Which is better?

Depends on the look you want and the budget. Bluestone is natural stone, more expensive, classic CT look. Pavers are engineered, uniform, lower cost per square foot, more color and pattern options. Both last decades when installed right. We show you both on the site visit and you pick.

Can I have a patio built in fall or winter?

Fall, yes, as long as we can install before the ground freezes hard. Winter, generally no. Cold ground makes proper base compaction harder and polymeric sand will not activate below a certain temperature. We schedule winter jobs for the next spring. We will tell you straight whether your project should wait.

How do I take care of my patio?

Sweep it. Rinse it with water when it gets dirty. Reseal it every few years if it is bluestone or natural stone. Pavers usually do not need sealing. Polymeric sand joints last a long time but may need a refresh after 8 to 10 years. We tell every customer the same maintenance steps after we finish the job.
