01 — Bathroom Remodels

What We Do

Bathrooms are unforgiving. Mistakes show up as water damage, mold, and rotting subfloor within a year or two. We remodel bathrooms in CT for folks who want the work done right the first time, with real waterproofing under the surface. Custom tile showers with proper membranes. Stone and tile floor installation. Vanity replacements and counter installs. Full bathroom renovations including plumbing rough-in, electrical, drywall, and final finish. Half bath and powder room updates. Our masonry background gives us the stone and tile skills bathrooms need to look right and last decades.

02 — Layout & Design

End-to-End

Most folks call us for a master bath or main bath remodel. Sometimes the existing bathroom is dated and they want a refresh. Sometimes the bathroom has water damage and they want to rebuild it right. We also handle bathroom additions, half bath conversions, and accessibility upgrades for aging in place. Each project gets full trade coordination so plumbing, electrical, and finishes all hit on schedule. We do the masonry, tile, and stone work ourselves. Other trades come in at the right milestones. That coordination is what keeps a bathroom project on time.

03 — Waterproofing First

Under the Tile

Bathroom remodels fail when waterproofing gets rushed. Tile alone is not waterproof. The membrane behind and below the tile is what keeps water out of the framing. Cheap installs skip the membrane or use the wrong product. Within two years, water gets through grout joints and into the wall. Mold grows. Subfloor rots. We install proper waterproofing membranes on every wet area. Showers get full membrane systems. Tile floors get the right underlayment. The waterproofing is invisible but it is what makes the bathroom last.

Common Problems

Common Bathroom Problems
in Connecticut

We get called for bathroom repairs as often as new remodels. Most issues trace back to bad waterproofing or rushed installs from previous contractors. Here is what we see in CT homes.

Water Damage Behind the Shower

Tile shower with no waterproofing membrane behind it. Water has been getting through grout joints for years and rotting the wall framing. By the time you notice it, the damage is extensive. We tear out the failed area, replace damaged framing and subfloor, install proper membrane systems, and re-tile correctly. Full shower rebuilds are common on these jobs.

Cracked or Loose Tile

Tile installed over a bad substrate or without proper underlayment. Tiles crack and pop up from the floor or walls. Sometimes individual tiles can be replaced. Most of the time the whole floor or wall needs to come up because the substrate underneath has failed. Patching cracked tile rarely solves the underlying problem.

Mold and Mildew Problems

Bathroom has poor ventilation, bad waterproofing, or both. Mold grows on grout, behind walls, or under the floor. We address the source of the moisture, remove affected materials, and rebuild with proper waterproofing and ventilation. Just cleaning the mold without fixing the cause means it comes back within months.

Our Process

How We Run
Your Bathroom Project

Five steps from first call to finished bathroom. Smaller scope than a kitchen but more waterproofing detail and trade coordination per square foot.

1

Site Visit & Consultation

We come out to the property, look at the site, take measurements, and listen to what you want. Layout, materials, budget, timeline. No pressure. This is where we figure out if the project makes sense.

2

Written Estimate

Within a few business days you get a detailed written estimate with line items for materials, labor, permits, and disposal. No vague lump-sum numbers. You see exactly what you are paying for before signing anything.

3

Demo & Rough-In

Existing bathroom comes out. Plumbing and electrical rough-in for the new layout. Waterproofing membranes installed in wet areas. Anything structural gets addressed before finish work starts.

4

Tile, Vanity & Fixtures

Tile installed with proper thin-set and grout. Vanity, toilet, and fixtures mounted level. Glass shower doors fitted. Trim work last. Everything checked twice before turning water on.

5

Walkthrough & Handoff

Final walkthrough with you on site. We go over the work, care instructions, and any maintenance you should know about. Job site gets cleaned. You get finished work backed by our workmanship.

Materials That Matter

Bathroom Materials
We Use

Bathrooms need materials rated for wet environments. We tell you what holds up and what does not. Cheap materials in a bathroom are the most expensive mistake.

Waterproofing Membranes

Schluter Kerdi or Wedi board waterproofing in showers and wet areas. Not just a moisture barrier — a full waterproof envelope that keeps water out of the framing behind the tile.

Porcelain & Ceramic Tile

Full tile packages for floors, walls, and showers. Rated for wet-area use. Set with proper thin-set on solid substrate. Grout sealed after cure.

Natural Stone Tile

Marble, travertine, or slate for premium bath finishes. Sealed for water resistance. Cut and set with tighter joints than standard tile. Long-term investment finish.

Custom Vanities

Solid wood or plywood-box vanities with soft-close hardware. Stone or quartz countertops. Undermount sinks with matching backsplash where the design calls for it.

Fixtures & Hardware

Delta, Moen, or Kohler fixtures depending on your budget and style. Real brass or stainless valves inside the wall — not the plastic bodies budget builders use.

Glass Shower Enclosures

Frameless or semi-frameless tempered glass enclosures. Custom fit to the opening. Better sealing than sliding doors. Sized to code for egress.

Watch For These

What Makes a
Bathroom Remodel Fail

Bathroom remodels fail for predictable reasons. Most have to do with what goes on under the tile, not what shows on top. Here is what to watch for before you hire any bathroom contractor.

1

Skipping Waterproofing Membranes

Tile alone is not waterproof. Water gets through grout joints, especially around shower corners and floor drains. Without a membrane behind and below the tile, that water reaches the framing. Wall studs rot. Subfloor fails. Mold grows. We install full membrane systems on every wet area. No shortcuts.

2

Wrong Substrate Behind Tile

Drywall behind shower tile is a recipe for failure. Cement board, foam waterproof board, or proper coated substrate is what tile needs in wet areas. We install the right substrate for each application. The substrate is buried under the tile but it determines if the bathroom lasts 30 years or 3.

3

Bad Grout Selection or Install

Wrong grout type for the application. Joints too wide or too narrow. Grout not sealed after install. All cause failures. We use the right grout for each application, install at the right joint width, and seal everything after curing.

4

Poor Ventilation

Bathrooms need ventilation to clear moisture. Without it, moisture sits on walls and ceilings, causing mold and finish failures. We make sure the bathroom has working ventilation as part of every remodel. Sometimes that means a new fan, sometimes upgrading the duct work to actually move air outside.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions
About Bathroom Remodels

Real answers from 15 years of bathroom remodeling in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in CT?

Wide range. A half bath update with new fixtures and paint is on the lower end. A master bath with custom shower, double vanity, and premium tile runs much higher. CT pricing varies by town. We come out, listen to what you want, and put a written estimate with detailed line items in your hands within a few business days.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

Depends on scope. A half bath update finishes in 1 to 3 weeks. A standard main bath runs 3 to 6 weeks. A master bath with full custom work can take 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest variables are tile work time and trade coordination. We give you a real timeline based on the actual project.

Will I have a working bathroom during the remodel?

If you have more than one bathroom in the house, yes. If we are remodeling your only bathroom, the bathroom will be unavailable during most of the project. We coordinate with you to minimize the no-bathroom period and can sometimes leave the toilet usable while other work happens around it.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel?

Most CT towns require permits for bathroom remodels that involve plumbing, electrical, or structural changes. Cosmetic updates that only involve replacing fixtures and finishes sometimes do not need permits. We check with your local building department before starting. If a permit is needed, we pull it.

Tile or stone in the shower?

Porcelain tile is more durable, easier to maintain, and lower cost. Natural stone is more beautiful but needs sealing and more maintenance. We use porcelain for most shower installs, with stone as accent pieces or for premium remodels where the look matters most. We talk through both on the site visit.

What is the biggest bathroom remodel mistake to avoid?

Skipping the waterproofing membrane. Some contractors quote without it to win the job, then either skip it entirely or use cheap substitutes. Without proper waterproofing, the bathroom will fail within a few years. Ask any contractor what waterproofing system they use. If they cannot name a specific product like Schluter or Wedi, find another contractor.
