What We Do

Stone Wall Installation
, Repair & Solutions

Full-scope stone walls work in Connecticut. Real craftsmanship, honest pricing, and results that hold up.

01 — Wall Construction

What We Build

A stone wall holds back dirt, frames a yard, or finishes off a garden. We build all three across CT. Most folks call us for one of two reasons. Either they have a slope that needs to be held back, or they want a wall that looks good and lasts. Both come down to the same thing: a solid base, real drainage, and stones that are set right. We do all our walls by hand. No shortcuts, no quick fixes that fall apart in three winters.

02 — Types of Walls

End-to-End

Most of our work is for CT homeowners with a slope problem. A retaining wall fixes that. We also build garden walls for folks who want a yard that looks finished. Property line walls for people who want privacy without putting up a fence. Outdoor living walls that wrap around patios and fire pits. Each one needs a different base, a different stone, and a different approach. We have built every kind in CT for 15 years. We know what works in this soil and this climate.

03 — Drainage First

Under the Wall

Most walls fail because of two things: bad drainage and a weak base. That is the whole story. Water builds up behind the wall, freezes in winter, and pushes it over. Or the base was not deep enough and the wall settles unevenly. Both problems are invisible until the wall starts leaning. We do not skip those parts. Every retaining wall we build gets drainage behind it. Every base goes to the right depth for the soil. That is why our walls from 10 years ago still look the same today.

Common Problems

Common Stone Wall Problems
in Connecticut

Sometimes you do not need a new wall. You need an old one fixed. We get called for repair work on walls built by other contractors. Here is what we see most often in CT.

Wall Is Leaning or Bulging

Almost always a drainage problem. Water sits behind the wall, freezes, and pushes the wall out. By the time you can see it leaning, the damage is done. Sometimes we can rebuild the affected section. Other times the whole wall needs to come down and go back up with proper drainage. We will tell you which on the site visit.

Stones Falling Out or Loose Caps

Usually a mortar failure or a cap that was set without enough adhesive. Loose caps are a safety problem, especially if kids or pets are around. We pull the loose pieces, clean the joint, and reset everything with the right mortar mix for CT freeze and thaw.

Cracks Running Through the Wall

Foundation settled, or the base was never compacted right. Hairline cracks are cosmetic. Cracks wider than a pencil mean structural movement. We check the base, look at the drainage, and decide if the wall can be saved or needs a rebuild.

Our Process

How We
Build Your Wall

Five steps from first call to finished wall. You know what is coming next at every stage. No mystery, no contractor games.

1

Site Visit & Consultation

We come out to the property, look at the site, take measurements, and listen to what you want. Layout, materials, budget, timeline. No pressure. This is where we figure out if the project makes sense.

2

Written Estimate

Within a few business days you get a detailed written estimate with line items for materials, labor, permits, and disposal. No vague lump-sum numbers. You see exactly what you are paying for before signing anything.

3

Base & Drainage

Dig to the right depth for the wall height. Compact the base. For retaining walls, drainage pipe and gravel go in before the first stone. This step is invisible but it is what makes the wall last.

4

Wall Construction

Stones or block set by hand. Every course leveled and locked. Batter checked with a level for retaining walls. Mortar mix adjusted for weather. Cap stones cut and set at the end.

5

Walkthrough & Handoff

Final walkthrough with you on site. We go over the work, care instructions, and any maintenance you should know about. Job site gets cleaned. You get finished work backed by our workmanship.

Materials That Matter

What Your Wall
Is Made Of

Pick the stone or block that fits your house, your slope, and your budget. We will tell you the truth about each one. No upselling, no pushing the most expensive option.

Fieldstone

Natural New England fieldstone in random shapes. Classic look that fits any CT property. Dry-stacked or mortared depending on the wall type. Long service life.

Cut Stone

Sawn stone with straight edges and consistent thickness. Cleaner and more formal look. Faster to install than fieldstone. Higher material cost, tighter joints.

Engineered Block

Manufactured segmental retaining wall block. Consistent size, designed to lock together. Best for tall retaining walls where structural engineering matters more than the look.

Cap Stones

Full-thickness cap stones cut, fitted, and set with the right mortar. Sheds water off the top of the wall. Loose caps are a safety issue and let water into the wall core.

Perforated Drain Pipe

4-inch perforated pipe behind every retaining wall we build. Water drains before it can freeze and push the wall out. This is why walls we build 10 years ago still look the same.

Drainage Gravel

Clean crushed stone behind retaining walls. Creates a channel for water to reach the drain pipe. Without it, the drainage pipe clogs and the whole system fails.

Watch For These

What Makes a
Stone Wall Fail

If you have ever driven past a leaning stone wall, you have seen what happens when a contractor cuts corners. Most CT wall failures come down to four things. Here is what to watch for before you hire anyone, including us.

1

No Drainage Behind the Wall

This is the big one. Walls without drainage trap water behind them. In CT, that water freezes 15 to 20 times every winter. Each freeze pushes the wall a little further out. Within five years, the wall is leaning. Within ten, it is on the ground. Every retaining wall we build gets a perforated drain pipe and gravel behind it. No exceptions.

2

Base Not Deep Enough

In CT, the frost line is around 42 inches. Anything built shallower than that can heave when the ground freezes. Garden walls under 2 feet can sometimes get away with a shallow base. Retaining walls cannot. We dig to the right depth for the height and soil type. It takes longer. It is the only way to do it right.

3

Wrong Stone for the Job

Some stones split and crack in CT freeze and thaw. Others handle it for a century. Knowing the difference comes from years of building walls in this climate. We source stone from quarries that supply our area, so we know which materials hold up. We will not sell you a wall in a stone we have not tested.

4

Mortar Mix Off

Wrong mortar mix is a slower failure. Joints crumble, caps loosen, the whole face of the wall starts to look tired within five or six years. We use the right mortar for the stone and the application. Cold weather mix in fall and early spring. Standard mix the rest of the year.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions About Stone Walls
in CT

Real answers from 15 years of stone walls in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

How much does a stone wall cost in CT?

Depends on length, height, and the stone you pick. A short garden wall in fieldstone is on the lower end, usually a few thousand dollars. A tall retaining wall with drainage, permits, and engineering runs higher, sometimes into the tens of thousands. We come out, measure the site, look at the soil, and put a real number in writing within two business days. No phone-guess pricing because every job is different.

Do I need a permit for a stone wall?

Most CT towns want a permit if the wall is over four feet tall. Some towns require a permit at three feet. A few want one at any height if the wall touches a property line. We check with your local building department before we start. If your town needs a permit, we pull it. You do not have to deal with the paperwork or the inspector. We handle both.

How long will the wall last?

Built right, 50 to 100 years. The walls that fail in five years all have the same problems: bad drainage, weak base, or wrong stone for the climate. We do not skip those parts. The oldest walls in CT have been standing for over a century. Same principles apply today. Good base, real drainage, right materials, hands that know what they are doing.

What stone should I pick?

Depends on your house and your goal. Fieldstone for a classic New England look. Cut stone for cleaner lines and a more formal style. Engineered block for tall retaining walls where strength matters more than appearance. We show you photos of each option on the site visit and you pick. We will tell you what works on your property, but the final choice is yours.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Drainage, almost every time. Water builds up behind the wall, freezes in winter, expands, and pushes the wall outward. After enough freeze and thaw cycles, the wall leans, then falls. We put a perforated drain pipe and gravel behind every retaining wall we build. That single step is the difference between a wall that lasts 50 years and one that fails in five.

Can you build on a steep slope?

Yes. Steep slopes need a deeper base, geogrid reinforcement, and serious drainage behind the wall. Sometimes the wall needs engineering, especially over a certain height. We look at the slope on the site visit and design the wall around it. We will tell you straight if your slope needs an engineer or if we can handle it under standard CT code.
