What We Do

Chimney Repair
, Rebuild & Installation Services

Full-scope chimney services work in Connecticut. Real craftsmanship, honest pricing, and results that hold up.

01 — Chimney Rebuilds

What We Do

Chimneys take the worst of CT weather. Wind, rain, snow, freeze and thaw cycles, all hitting the most exposed part of your house. Even well-built chimneys need maintenance every 10 to 15 years. Poorly built chimneys need work much sooner. We handle every kind of chimney job in CT. New construction chimneys for additions and new houses. Full chimney rebuilds when the existing one is past saving. Partial repairs when only the top section is damaged. Repointing when the mortar joints have failed. Crown replacement and flashing work.

02 — Repairs & Repointing

End-to-End

Most folks call us because they noticed something specific. Water stains on the wall near the chimney. Mortar pieces in the driveway. The chimney looks like it is leaning. A chimney inspection report from a recent home purchase. We come out and tell you what is actually going on. Not every chimney problem is a full rebuild. Sometimes a few hundred dollars of repointing and flashing work solves the issue. Other times the chimney has structural problems that need to come down and go back up. We tell you which on the site visit.

03 — Crown & Cap

Watertight

Chimneys fail because of the same things over and over in CT. Bad mortar mix that does not handle freeze and thaw. Missing or cracked crowns that let water into the top. Failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof. Spalled brick from years of weather exposure. We address each one with the right materials and the right techniques. Crowns get rebuilt with concrete designed for the application. Flashing gets done with proper step flashing and counter flashing. Mortar joints get raked out and repointed with mortar matched to the original.

Common Problems

Common Chimney Problems
in Connecticut

Chimneys give clear warning signs when something is wrong. Most CT homeowners notice these problems but do not know what they mean. Here is what we get called for most often.

Water Stains on Walls Near the Chimney

Almost always a flashing problem or a missing crown. Water gets in at the top of the chimney or where it meets the roof, then runs down inside the wall structure. By the time stains show, water has been getting in for months or years. We find the entry point and fix it. Sometimes flashing repair. Sometimes crown rebuild. Sometimes both.

Mortar Pieces in the Driveway

Mortar joints have failed and pieces are falling. This is repointing territory. Old mortar gets raked out, joints get cleaned, and fresh mortar matched to the original goes in. Catching this early means just repointing. Letting it go means parts of the brick start to come loose too.

Chimney Leaning or Cracking

Structural problem. The footing might have settled, the cap might be loose, or the chimney might have movement at the roof line. Leaning chimneys do not fix themselves. We assess whether the lean is cosmetic or structural. Cosmetic leans can sometimes be stabilized. Structural leans usually need full rebuilds from the affected section up.

Our Process

How We
Handle Chimney Work

Five steps from first call to finished chimney. The scope varies but the process is the same for inspections, repairs, and full rebuilds.

1

Site Visit & Consultation

We come out to the property, look at the site, take measurements, and listen to what you want. Layout, materials, budget, timeline. No pressure. This is where we figure out if the project makes sense.

2

Written Estimate

Within a few business days you get a detailed written estimate with line items for materials, labor, permits, and disposal. No vague lump-sum numbers. You see exactly what you are paying for before signing anything.

3

Demo & Rebuild Prep

Failed masonry comes off. Damaged crown, cap, or flashing gets removed. If the chimney is being rebuilt from a certain height, we tear down to sound masonry before starting the rebuild.

4

Masonry Rebuild

Brick or stone laid back up with the right mortar mix for CT weather. Crown cast to shed water. New cap installed. Flashing tied into the roof correctly. Every joint tooled.

5

Walkthrough & Handoff

Final walkthrough with you on site. We go over the work, care instructions, and any maintenance you should know about. Job site gets cleaned. You get finished work backed by our workmanship.

Materials That Matter

What We Use
on Chimney Work

Chimney materials are different from patio materials. The right materials matter more here because chimneys take the most weather of anything on your house.

Firebrick & Refractory

Firebrick and refractory mortar rated for direct flame contact. Used in the firebox and smoke chamber. Standard brick will crack and fail if used in these areas.

Type N & S Mortar

Cold-weather rated mortar mixes for the chimney exterior. Type S for high-strength applications, Type N for standard. Wrong mix and joints crumble within a few winters.

Cast Concrete Crowns

Poured-in-place concrete crowns with proper overhang and drip edge. Not the thin mortar wash most contractors use. Cast crowns last 40+ years before needing replacement.

Stainless Steel Caps

Stainless caps with mesh spark arrestor. Keeps animals, water, and embers out. Sized to the flue. Galvanized caps rust out in 5 years; stainless lasts the life of the chimney.

Copper or Aluminum Flashing

Step flashing and counter-flashing tied into the roof material. Copper for premium jobs, aluminum for standard. Flashing failure is the #1 reason chimneys leak at the roof line.

Clay Flue Tiles

Standard flue liner for masonry chimneys. Sized to the appliance. Replaced when cracked. Stainless liners used when clay is not code-compliant for the appliance.

Watch For These

What Makes a Chimney Fail
in Connecticut

CT weather is hard on chimneys. They take more weather exposure per square foot than any other part of your house. Most chimney failures trace to four common causes.

1

Bad Crown

The crown is the concrete top of the chimney. If it cracks or was never built right, water gets in from the top and runs down the inside. A bad crown causes most chimney water damage. We rebuild crowns with refractory mix designed for chimney use, sloped properly to shed water.

2

Failed Flashing

Where the chimney meets the roof needs proper step flashing layered with the shingles, plus counter flashing into the chimney mortar joints. Roofers and masons both blame each other for flashing problems. We do flashing right as part of the masonry work, no finger-pointing.

3

Wrong Mortar Mix

Mortar mix has different ratings for different exposures. Chimneys in CT need Type S mortar rated for freeze and thaw. Type N mortar (cheaper, weaker) fails on chimneys within a few winters. We use Type S on every chimney job.

4

Ignoring Small Problems

A hairline crack in the crown becomes a major leak in three years. A few loose mortar joints become a structural problem in five years. Chimney problems get worse, never better. Catching things early means cheaper repairs. We tell every customer to keep an eye on their chimney.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions
About Chimney Work

Real answers from 15 years of chimney services in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

How much does chimney repair cost in CT?

Wide range. Simple repointing of a few feet of mortar joints is on the low end. Full chimney rebuild with permits and crown work is on the high end. We come out, inspect from ground and roof, and put a real number in writing within two business days. We do not quote chimney work over the phone because every chimney is different.

How do I know if my chimney needs work?

Water stains on walls near the chimney are the most common warning sign. Mortar pieces in the driveway. The chimney looks like it is leaning. White stains running down the bricks (efflorescence) means water is getting in somewhere. Any of these is worth a call. We come out and tell you what is going on.

Do I need a permit for chimney work?

Repointing and minor repairs usually do not need a permit. Full chimney rebuilds and structural changes always need a permit. We check with your local CT building department before starting. If a permit is needed, we pull it and handle the inspections.

How often should chimneys be inspected?

Once a year, especially before the heating season starts. CT freeze and thaw cycles are hard on chimneys, so annual visual inspection catches problems while they are still small. A full professional inspection every 5 to 7 years is also a good idea, especially on older houses.

Can you match my old chimney brick?

Sometimes. Older bricks can be hard to source exactly. We can match color and size reasonably close in most cases. For partial rebuilds where blending matters, we will tell you up front if the match will be perfect or just close. Sometimes a full visible side rebuild looks better than a patched section.

What is the difference between repointing and tuckpointing?

Common confusion. Repointing means removing damaged mortar and putting fresh mortar in. Tuckpointing is technically a decorative technique where two mortar colors are used to create a fine line effect. In CT and most of the US, the two terms get used interchangeably for general mortar joint repair work.
