What We Do

Custom Fireplace
Construction Services

Full-scope custom fireplaces work in Connecticut. Real craftsmanship, honest pricing, and results that hold up.

01 — Indoor & Outdoor

What We Build

A fireplace is the focal point of any room it sits in. We build them in CT for folks who want a real masonry fireplace, not a metal box with stone glued on the front. Indoor stone fireplaces are our most common job. Outdoor wood-burning fireplaces for patios and outdoor living spaces. Fire pits for casual outdoor seating areas. Outdoor kitchens with built-in pizza ovens or grill stations. Every fireplace gets the right firebox construction, the right flue sizing, and stonework that does justice to the focal point of your space.

02 — Custom Designs

End-to-End

Most folks call us for an outdoor fireplace on their patio. CT homeowners want to extend the time they can sit outside into fall and spring. An outdoor fireplace turns a regular patio into a usable space three seasons of the year. Indoor fireplaces are usually new construction or renovation projects where we are working with a builder or designer. Fire pits are simpler installs that homeowners can pair with their existing patio. Outdoor kitchens are bigger projects that combine fireplace work with cooking surfaces and prep space.

03 — Code-Compliant

Built to Last

Fireplaces are not the place to cut corners. A poorly built firebox is a fire hazard. A poorly built chimney does not draft and fills your room with smoke. A poorly built outdoor fireplace cracks within a few CT winters because of the wrong materials. We build to code, use refractory firebrick in fireboxes, size flues correctly, and finish stonework that holds up to repeated heating and cooling cycles. Every fireplace gets the same attention to the parts you cannot see as the parts you can.

Common Problems

Common Fireplace Problems
in Connecticut

Many of the fireplaces we are called to fix were built by general contractors who do not specialize in masonry. Common problems trace back to firebox construction, flue sizing, or material choices wrong for CT weather.

Smoke Coming Into the Room

Almost always a flue sizing or chimney height problem. The flue is too small for the firebox opening, or the chimney is not tall enough to draft properly. Sometimes we can extend the chimney. Sometimes we install a smoke chamber correction. Sometimes the fireplace needs a full rebuild to make it work right.

Cracked Firebox or Loose Firebrick

Firebox damage from heat cycles or from poor materials. Standard brick cannot handle the heat of a real fire long term. Firebox repairs need refractory firebrick and high-temperature mortar. We rebuild damaged fireboxes with the right materials so they hold up to years of regular use.

Outdoor Fireplace Cracking or Failing

Common problem in CT. Outdoor fireplaces built with the wrong stone or mortar crack within a few freeze and thaw cycles. We assess whether the failure is structural or cosmetic. Sometimes we rebuild the affected sections. Other times the fireplace needs to come down and be rebuilt with materials rated for outdoor CT use.

Materials That Matter

Fireplace
Material Options

Pick the stone or brick that fits your house and the style you want. Indoor and outdoor have some different material considerations. We walk through both on the site visit.

Firebrick

Rated for direct flame contact in the firebox. Standard brick cracks and fails under fire temperatures. Firebrick handles decades of daily use.

Refractory Mortar

High-temperature mortar for the firebox and smoke chamber. Bonds firebrick under heat cycling. Standard mortar fails at these temperatures.

Natural Stone

Fieldstone, cut stone, or veneer for the surround. Full-thickness stone or 1-inch veneer depending on the design. Fitted and set with the right mortar.

Brick

Standard exterior brick for surround and firebox exterior. Wide color and texture range. Set in traditional or contemporary patterns.

Cast Stone Mantels

Cast stone or natural stone mantels sized to the firebox. Fire-rated when required. Custom shapes cut for premium installs.

Steel Firebox Kits

Prefab steel fireboxes for gas or ventless applications. Faster install and code-approved for specific fuel types. Traditional masonry firebox is our default for wood-burning.

Watch For These

What Makes a Fireplace Fail
in Connecticut

Fireplaces fail for different reasons depending on whether they are indoor or outdoor. Both have common mistakes that show up in fireplaces built by contractors who do not specialize in masonry. Here is what to watch for.

1

Firebox Built With Standard Brick

Standard brick is not rated for direct flame. It cracks, spalls, and crumbles from repeated heat cycles. Fireboxes need refractory firebrick rated to handle 2,000 degrees. We use refractory brick and high-temperature mortar in every firebox. That is what makes the fireplace last for decades instead of years.

2

Wrong Flue Size

Flue cross-section should be roughly one tenth of the firebox opening area. Too small and the fireplace smokes into the room. Too big and the fireplace pulls too much heated air out of the house. We calculate the right flue size for the firebox opening and install accordingly.

3

Chimney Not Tall Enough

Chimneys need to extend at least 3 feet above the roof penetration and 2 feet above any roof line within 10 feet. Short chimneys do not draft. We build to the right height. Sometimes that means a tall chimney that bothers homeowners until they see what happens to a short one.

4

Outdoor Fireplace With Wrong Mortar

Standard masonry mortar fails in CT freeze and thaw if used outdoors on fireplaces. Type S mortar with added freeze resistance is what holds up. We use the right mortar for outdoor applications. Many contractors use whatever is in the truck. That is why so many outdoor fireplaces crack.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions
About Fireplaces

Real answers from 15 years of custom fireplaces in Connecticut. No marketing fluff.

How much does a custom fireplace cost in CT?

Wide range depending on size, indoor or outdoor, and material choice. A simple outdoor stone fireplace on an existing patio runs lower. A full indoor masonry fireplace with chimney runs higher, especially in new construction where structural work is needed. We give you a written estimate after the site visit with everything broken out.

How long does it take to build a fireplace?

Outdoor fireplaces typically finish in 5 to 10 work days. Indoor fireplaces run longer, especially with permits and inspections. Full chimney work can take 2 to 3 weeks depending on access and complexity. We give you a real timeline in the estimate based on the specific project.

Do I need a permit for a fireplace in CT?

Indoor fireplaces always need a permit. Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits usually do not require a permit in most CT towns, though some towns regulate fire features near property lines or wooded areas. We check with your local building department before starting any work.

Wood-burning or gas? Which is better?

Depends on how you want to use the fireplace. Wood-burning gives you the real fire experience with the crackling and the smell. Gas gives you instant on and off with no maintenance between uses. Both have pros and cons. We build both. We will talk through the differences on the site visit.

Can I add a fireplace to my existing house?

Yes, but the project gets complicated. The fireplace needs a footing that often goes below the basement floor. The chimney needs to penetrate the roof. The space needs structural support. We assess feasibility on the site visit and tell you straight what the project involves.

Can outdoor fireplaces be used in winter?

Yes. CT homeowners use outdoor fireplaces year-round when they want to. The fireplace itself does not care about the temperature. You will care about the temperature standing in front of it. We build outdoor fireplaces with materials rated for full CT weather including winter use.
